Perthes Test
Purpose: Detect venous insufficiency in patients with varicose veins. It has high sensitivity (0.97) but low specificity (0.20).
Procedure:"With the patient standing, a tourniquet was applied below the knee. The patient was asked to do 10 heel raises on the spot. If the varicosities emptied, the site of reflux was determined to be above the tourniquet (SFJ, MTP or SPJ)" (Kim, Richards & Kent, 2000, p. 82).
Normal Result: No change in the varicosity noted.
Abnormal Result: "If the varicosities emptied, the site of reflux was determined to be above the tourniquet (SFJ, MTP or SPJ). If the veins remained distended, reflux was taken to be below the tourniquet (calf perforator incompetence). If the complained of pain, the possibility of deep venous occlusion was considered" (Kim, Richards & Kent, 2000, p. 82).
