Stemmer's Sign
Purpose: Detect the presence of lymphedema. Stemmer's sign may also be present in venous insufficiency that has resulted in lymphedema.
Procedure: The examiner observes the second phalanx on the foot. A skin fold may be noted at the proximal joint on the dorsum of the foot. The examiner tries to lift the skin on the dorsum of the foot at the base of the second phalanx by pinching the skin.
Normal Result: The skin at the base of the second phalanx should lift or tent as the examiner pinches the skin.
Abnormal Result: The examiner is unable to grasp or tent the skin at the base of the second phalanx when the skin is pinched.
